Strategy and Development Direction
the development direction
Darin and Tarout Island has received royal approval for its development direction, communicated via Royal Court telegram No. (31155) dated 1/5/1444H, which aims to enhance quality of life, grow local output, and achieve economic diversification for the island by leveraging its heritage, environmental, and tourism advantages.
The development direction is grounded in establishing the island's standing as a home to natural beauty and rich heritage, and rests on three main pillars aimed at maximizing the island's historical and environmental value, and building a sustainable development destination that enhances quality of life and supports the local economy.
First: Celebrating and activating the island's rich heritage by restoring prominent heritage assets and putting them to cultural and touristic use — including the restoration of Tarout Castle, the historic Al-Dirah town, Darin Palace and its historic town, and the historic Darin Airport — and connecting these sites with cultural trails and public plazas for activities and events, alongside developing heritage hospitality experiences and launching annual cultural events that highlight the island's identity and deep-rooted history.
Second: Revitalizing marine and environmental habitats by protecting and sustaining natural assets — foremost among them the mangrove forests and sensitive agricultural areas — and developing environmentally balanced waterfronts that enable marine activities within supportive regulatory frameworks, alongside establishing a national park with a visitor center and birdwatching trails that boost tourism appeal while preserving environmental balance.
Third: Building a highly livable destination by developing lifestyle offerings and programs, beach resorts, and recreational and sports facilities, and improving the urban landscape, infrastructure, and transport networks — achieving ease of access, connecting the island's facilities, and supporting the integration of urban development with its environmental and cultural character.
This direction represents a comprehensive strategic framework that drives balanced development between people, place, and nature, and strengthens the island's position as an integrated tourism and development destination, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
